PMC Helps Radio and Multimedia Students Learn Real World Skills

PMC twotwo.5 active loudspeakers have been installed in new broadcast studios created by Veale Associates for the Ealing School of Art, Design and Media (part of the University of West London).

The two studios are part of a £50 million pound campus regeneration scheme for the University aimed at improving students’ learning and social experience. They are now being used to teach students on the University's BA (Hons) in Radio and Multimedia Audio Production course the creative and technical skills needed for a career in radio. Blast Radio, the University of West London's official student station, is also broadcast from the facilities, thus giving students the opportunity to gain real, hands-on experience in a radio studio.

Veale Associates worked closely with school academics, technicians and principal contractor Willmott Dixon to create studios that reflect the latest ideas and practices in radio so that students gain real experience of the commercial world.

Justin Randell, Veale Associate's Technical Consultant who specified the PMC speakers, says:  "The Broadcast studios at University of West London were designed to mirror professional facilities in radio, whilst also providing enhanced teaching functionality. We design studio acoustics to provide optimal performance within the space and this goes hand in hand with our choice of monitoring.

"We chose the PMC twotwo.5 speakers because these are a natural evolution from the TB2s used in professional broadcast facilities. They offer excellent sound monitoring, which is essential to ensure radio content is transmitted clearly as it goes out on air. The compact cabinet size also makes them easier to mount when space is at a premium."

Both Studios are identically equipped with a Lawo Crystal mixer and Pro Tools with RedNet at the heart of each system.

Paul Lohneis, Head of Film and Media at UWL, adds, “Together with an exciting new curriculum, and a dynamic team of connected-creative academics working at the heart of the industry, this new facility will put us at the forefront of HE radio and multimedia audio teaching in the UK.”
