“Masters of Audio” Seminars At AES

Continuing their company tradition of inviting high-profile audio industry movers and shakers to speak on music and audio production hot topics at AES Conventions, PMC has announced the final line-up for its Masters of Audio seminars at the 133rd Convention in San Francisco next week.

As in previous years, industry luminaries will speak throughout the convention in a specially set up PMC demonstration suite, Room 114 at the Moscone Convention Center. The room will feature several sets of PMC monitors, from compact nearfields including the new twotwo™ range (which makes its US debut at the AES: for more information, see www.pmc-speakers.com/twotwo) and the giant, high-resolution BB5-XBD-As beloved of mastering engineers, hit producers and film music specialists worldwide.

This year, PMC has invited plug-in processing specialists Waves, who will be sharing some of their latest advances in analogue modelling technology and demonstrating them through PMC's speakers. The seminar programme will also be interspersed with listening and critique sessions, where AES members and students can listen to their own or commercial mixes on PMC's high-resolution systems for evaluation purposes.

The confirmed “Masters of Audio” line-up is as follows:

Charles Deenen of Electronic Arts will be sharing his wealth of experience on the subject of sound design for trailers and games, built during a career that has seen him work on over 200 games, as well as many feature films and associated trailers.

Multiple Grammy-winning producer/engineer Tony Maserati, known for his work with Mary J Blige, David Bowie, Notorious BIG, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys amongst others, is inviting his production team Outfit 27 (Justin Hergett, Spider, Jon Castelli, Chris Tabron) to help him produce and mix a complete track in front of AES members. Held in the PMC demo suite over three sessions (two on Saturday October 27, one the next day), this workshop will take a track from concept through production to a finished mix.

Multiple Grammy-winning producer, engineer, mastering specialist and Mix magazine journalist Erik Zobler will be sharing some of the secrets of engineering for stereo and 5.1, with reference to his back catalogue of projects including Teena Marie, Jeffrey Osborne and George Duke.

Acoustic specialist Jochen Veith will be talking about the importance of studio acoustics with reference to the challenges that faced him as Chief Architect & Acoustician on the refurbishment and, as it turned out, the reconstruction of the renowned Wisseloord Studios in The Netherlands. Jochen has designed hundreds of mixing, recording, movie and broadcast studios over the last 20 years for major studios and artists including Coldplay, Metropolis Studios in London, Max Martin Stockholm, Walt Disney, and many more.

LA-based Mastering Engineer Maor Appelbaum will be sharing some of the secrets of his art and explaining to seminar attendees how to master with impact.

Grammy-winning producer and mix engineer Ross Hogarth will be chairing a discussion on production techniques and demonstrating his favourite tools and some of the skills he has acquired over the course of his 30-year career through working with artists such as Shawn Colvin, The Black Crowes and R.E.M.

Chief Engineer to the San Francisco Symphony Jack Vad has over 200 classical audio recordings to his credit and is also a pioneer in the field of high-resolution and multi-channel recording techniques. His discussion session will focus on these and specialist classical recording techniques, with reference to many of his high-resolution recordings.

Last but far from least, former AES President and nine-time Grammy-winning producer/engineer Jim Anderson will be demonstrating some of his recent 5.1 work for the Blu Ray (Pure Audio) version of Patricia Barber's Modern Cool album. An advocate of the Blu Ray format for multi-channel audio, Jim will be explaining some of the benefits of the format to seminar attendees with examples.

We look forward to welcoming you in Room 114 at AES for a series of fascinating workshops, discussion seminars and seminars from some of the finest practitioners in the audio business.
